QuickViewPlus10.jpgDo you often receive digital files from others that you can’t open or read? Power Point, Photoshop, other graphics files, MS Works, MS Office 2007, HTML, ZIP, PDF, Corel WordPerfect, Corel QuattroPro, and many others are among the possible problem formats. Quick View Plus (QVP) from Avantstar is the simple one piece software solution. One reviewer described it as the “Swiss Army Knife” of software tools.

While it is possible to get viewers for various Microsoft products and other applications, it is very convenient to have one all purpose program for those special cases that suddenly appear. Lacking the latest Power Point viewer, or no photo editor, or a surprise ZIP file arrives, a quick solution is to have Quick View Plus on at least one computer. Also it is very comforting to view a strange email attachment without concern about worms or a virus. This QVP version 10 from Avanstar claims to support over 300 file formats. New file formats include:

·         Microsoft Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007

·         Corel WordPerfect X3, QuattroPro X3, Presentations X3

·         Outlook Form Templates

In addition to enhanced features for some file formats, QVP version 10 includes product integrations for Adobe Acrobat 8 and Mozilla Firefox 2.

The supported file format list is very long on two pages; including formats for Word Processing, Spread Sheets, Databases, Presentations, Compressed formats (Zip, etc.), and a very long list of Graphic formats. I have found only a few file types it will not open or read properly. MS Publisher files and MS Access 2003 or 2007 are among those not readable. The list of supported file formats does include Access through 2.0.

A very comprehensive version 10 User’s Guide is available for viewing or printing from the Help topics on the tool bar. This is highly recommended for reading or reference to assure that you will discover all of the available features and capabilities. Getting Started and Quick Tours sections are very helpful. The Quick View Features section is important. The Working with Specific File Types is contained in 11 pages. You will be able to adapt to the ways you use it with the Customizing Quick View Plus section. The section for Configuring Quick View Plus explains how to configure to work with other applications if you need to modify settings after installation or you install a new application.

A simple way to view files is to right click on the file name and select “Open with Quick View Plus.” With the file open in the View panel you have quite a few options:

·         Increase or decrease font size (right click in document)

·         Copy all or part of some documents ( Select all or part and click on Edit in tool bar)

·          Save Copy (Click in File in tool bar)

·         Find a word or words in the document (Edit in tool bar)

·         Create or add to Zip file (Quick Compress in File on tool bar)

·         Print document (in File on tool bar)

·         Send File as an email attachment (Send in File on tool bar)

·         Copy all or part of a Bitmap to the Clipboard

·         Create Windows Wallpaper from a graphics file (click Make Wallpaper on the File menu)

·         Extract one or more files from an Archive (PKZIP, etc)

·         Extract selected files from an Archive

·         Extract all files from an Archive

·         Add a file, files, and folders to an Archive

·         Delete selected files or folders from an Archive

·         Display embedded objects

·         Save a copy of an embedded object

·         View Internet files ( UUEncoded or HTML on local drives)

Quick View and Quick View Plus have been very helpful for me in the past. I recommend it highly for at least one computer in your home or business. Great also for the road warriors on their laptops. A fully functional free trial for 30 days will demonstrate the value of this “Swiss Army Knife” of software tools.

Quick View Plus works on any system running MS Windows XP or 2000 with Service Pack 2 installed. Approximately 16 MB of disk space is needed for a minimum installation. A full installation requires approximately 23 MB. Avanstar offers a 30 day trial for a fully functional version. The single user standard download costs $46.00. A boxed version sells for $49.00 plus shipping. Also available are 5 pack user prices. Upgrades are available for version 8 or higher; prices are $23.00 for download or boxed for $24 plus shipping.
