Did you think Microsoft Office Live was
strictly free software by Microsoft to produce a free website for novices?
Maybe you are one of those who believe the future of Microsoft Office Suite
will be rented or leased software. No more software pirating because you will
rent the software online and get all updates as they occur! It’s called
software as a service.
Well LIVE is pretty impressive.
This McGraw Hill-Osborne book, by author Greg
Holden, consists of 394 pages and 16 chapters. There are 3 versions of Live
available; Basic, Essentials and Premium. Basic is free, Essentials is $19.95 a
month and Premium is custom tailored to your needs or pocketbook.
Chapter 1 - Getting Your Home office In
Order. It's about getting the right equipment and setting up email that is
basic to a home office.
Chapter 2 is How to choose the version of
Office Live that is right for you. They give you features of various versions
and you make the choice as to what you think you need.
Chapter 3 is about creating a “Fully
Functional Business Web Site.” You can design and create a pretty impressive
web site for a beginner. No e-commerce is provided, but there are a lot of free
e-commerce sites you can link to and use.
Chapter 4 is about email and communicating
with the outside world. They even give you a few pages on keywords to get
people to visit your site.
Chapter 5 tells you how to:
·
Create
workspaces for employees.
·
Adjust
access levels for the workspaces you create.
·
Customize
your workspaces by adding web parts.
Chapter 6 discusses “Giving Your Employees
Access to Your Workspace. Did you know that Live offers more than 29 different
business applications to Essentials and Premium subscribers? The Dashboard is
basically a planning tool that can list upcoming contacts, tasks and events for
you and your co-workers. You can schedule events, sales opportunities, Project
issues and the Projects themselves.
Chapter 7 talks about allowing your vendors
and customers access to information they might need to know or want to know
including projects.
Chapter 8 shows you the way to manage and
schedule your projects. And Chapter 9 helps you learn about “Tracking Your
Assets and Inventory”.
Chapter 10 is all about customizing business
applications. This is where you learn about SharePoint Designer, a neat tool
for organizing web sites that use SharePoint technology. The author says that
SharePoint is a high powered and extensive application and this chapter only
covers the basics.
The downside is, it is exclusive. No other
web editor, including Microsoft’s Expression Web, allows you to open an Office
Live web site!
The next chapter (eleven) helps you use Live
to sell your products, including creation of a product catalog.
Chapter twelve (no more Arabic numbers, just
English versions) is the Document Manager part of the Dashboard (didn’t they
used to call these things menus?). I think this is a very useful tool,
especially if you’ve got a ton of documents out there.
The magic number thirteen section is titled
“Running an eBay Business with Office Live.” You can create auction pages for
eBay as well as configure a Microsoft hosted eBay store. This software will
even allow you put and sell multiple items each week (as many as 20 or 30 they
claim). They have a free version and a pay version (with more features of
course).
The next couples of chapters are about
“Ramping up Your Business Processes” with accounting, business admin services,
and advanced productivity tools.
It’s a great book with a lot of information
and resources for someone who is new to Office Live; it’s also great info for
all the “experts”.
