It’s common wisdom that avoiding suspicious web-based content and especially ‘dodgy’ websites will keep you safe on the Internet.
Unfortunately, that sort of information is ‘old and outdated technology’. Internet security (protecting both your computer and your identity) can however, be demystified. This presentation focuses on normal computer users, rather than “IT geeks,” and clearly explains the following topics:
    • Protecting yourself from virus, worms, Trojans, rootkits and, botnets
    • Computer safety tips
    • How to spot phishing attempts
    • How to recover when your email account has been hijacked
    • Email etiquette
    • Social networking safety tips
    • Software installation safety tips
    • Other free software used to create layered protection
    • Features and benefits of Avast's free antivirus program
    • Android Smartphone and Tablet safety and protection recommendations
Join presenter Bob Gostischa, as he simplifies, clarifies, and demystifies your computer, making your Internet experience a safe, secure and, enjoyable one. After a successful career in banking, Bob enjoys his retirement as an enthusiast IT security expert, most notably for Avast Software. Avast is the creator of avast! antivirus software. The Avast website has a discussion and help forum, where Bob has been helping with security-related and general computer issues since 2004. He has contributed over 20,000 forum interactions.

Git is a distributed revision control and source-code management system with an emphasis on speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows. Every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full version-tracking capabilities, independent of network access or a central server. Git is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2. Learn more at: http://git-scm.com/

Web developer Dennis Jarecke will be presenting a basic "Getting Started with Git" talk. If you have been putting off learning version control, or want to join in the discussion of best practices, please join us to learn more about this important web development skill.

What Content Management Systems Hath Wrought--A Brief Look at the Revolution in Flexible Online Content

With improvements in content management systems, web copy creators can now easily control the content on their website(s). Content has always been king, but since writers can now more easily place copy on their websites, they now have more responsibility to create high quality content.

At our November 15th meeting, writer, editor, marketing consultant, and writing coach John Ettorre (@WorkinWithWords) will share with us how improvements in content management systems have led to changes in writing workflow. John specializes in developing compelling website content that helps organizations tell their stories online. Since 1996, he has played a central role in developing the message for well over 100 websites, large and small. During that time, he has written web copy for dozens of major brand names, including Travelocity, Wells Fargo, Goodyear, Citizens Bank, GOJO Industries, Sun Trust, Cleveland Clinic, Intercontinental Hotels, and Kay and Jared Jewelers.
